The way fire color changers work is down to science.

When certain metals burn, they create flames in different colors.

Companies who manufacture such products would use safe chemicals to create the desired effect, so you do not have to worry about using them.

I would not suggest using them to cook your food though. I prefer to be safe than sorry.

What colors can you get from fire color changers?

Are Fire Color Changers Safe for Me?

There is certainly a risk level when using fire color changers and the risk is more pronounced when it comes to children.

Little kids often mistake the packets for candy and might ingest them accidentally, resulting in severe injuries.

The same can be said for adults too, so be sure to use them very carefully and keep them out of reach of anyone who does not know what it does.

You should also use the packets as instructed, which usually means throwing them into the flame unopened.

Are Fire Color Changers Safe for My Fire Pit?

Yes, they are safe for fire pits and are in fact designed for such purposes. The danger lies in the way you use them, and that is why it is very important to follow the instructions to a T.

That normally means that you should not open up the packet and expose the contents to the fire or anyone around you.

Most of all, you should not cook any kind of food over the fire when these things are burning.

Does Baking Soda Change the Color of Fire?

No, baking soda does not change the color of fire. In fact, baking soda is not flammable, and can in fact be used to put out a fire! But you will need a fairly large amount to do so.

There is a trick here though. You can dissolve the sodium bicarbonate in alcohol and dip the firewood into the solution.

That will likely yield a yellow flame!

Does Epsom Salt Change the Color of Fire?

On its own, epsom salt will not change the color of fire, and you will need to dissolve it in alcohol to make a solution instead.

There is a whole scientific explanation behind this and it is best to read it on Science Notes.

Other ways to change the color of fire

Copper pipe method

I have seen a few articles and a video about using this method but I have not tried it myself.

Basically, you need to make some kind of contraption with a copper pipe, an old metal hanger, and a gardening hose.

The problem I have is the burning of the garden hose, which is normally made of some kind of plastic.

I highly NOT RECOMMEND you try out this method as the fumes are potentially toxic.

Using candle wax

This method involves the mixing of different chemicals (depending on the colors you want to achieve) with melted candle wax to create your own DIY fire color changer.

Check out this article about creating different colored flames first and when you are ready to proceed, all you need to do is to melt candle wax and mix it with the chemical in a cup.

The proportion should be one part chemical and 3 parts wax.

In conclusion: The Best Fire Color Changers

It is a really simple and innocent party trick (just like adding fire pit signs to the area), but it makes campfires or any similar occasions so much more fun!

Be sure to check out the list of color changers and have a blast with your friends and family!
