What is a floor chair?

A floor chair is essentially a chair without legs! They are meant to be placed on the floor, which is great especially when you do not have enough seating around the house. I love using them as I’m able to let my feet be level and flat with the floor, a very comfortable position to relax, watch TV, or just read a book.

If you have tried sitting on the floor, you would know that it is pretty uncomfortable, and very soon you will start feeling aches or soreness. With a floor chair, they come with cushioned seats and a supportive backrest, ensuring that you can lounge around in comfort.

Lots of them also allow you to fold them up and store them away so you do not need to have them permanently placed around your living space.

How cool is that!

Do I need a floor chair for my home?

Well, the answer to this question really depends on your needs and preferences.

For some, they find that sitting on the floor is much more comfortable, or it could be something people use when they want to play with their kids. Some people enjoy working on the floor, while some just like the look of one.

Here are some other reasons why many people love it:

  • For gaming close up to the TV
  • Reading
  • Extra seats for guests
  • Meditation
  • Lazing outdoors

If you like the style of it, you should definitely purchase one.

What should I look for when buying a floor chair?

There are several factors to consider when shopping for a floor chair. Depending on what you intend to use it for, there seems to be a floor chair for every purpose!

Not only do you want to consider what you are using it for, here are a bunch of factors you might want to pay attention to when searching for your ideal floor chair.

Material

There are 2 aspects when it comes to considering the material of a floor chair, the exterior and the interior.

For exteriors, these are the most common ones use:

Cotton – These are very comfortable and great even during hot weather. Cleaning up is also pretty easy as you can simply use a damp cloth to take care of it. Most of the time, you can find cotton floor chairs in lots of different colors, giving you a huge variety to choose from.

Polyester/Synthetic fabric – This material resembles leather, and some might even call it faux leather. They are very easy to clean, as you are able to wipe it down with a damp cloth. They tend to last quite a long time and are suitable for use both indoors and outdoors. Generally speaking, they are comfortable for long use, but you will want to ensure that you are using them in a cool room for maximum comfort.

Synthetic leather – Usually made with a plastic base, this material has the closest look to real leather and provides lots of comfort especially for prolonged use. However, you need to take extra care of them as they tend to crack easily, more so during hot weather. Also, they are not quite suitable during hotter days.

For interiors:

Bean – Quite a common material used to fill floor chairs, but not necessarily the most comfortable. For short usage, they can be quite nice to use, but without proper support, I do not recommend it to use for long hours.

Polyurethane foam – This foam material is commonly used not just for floor chairs but also in sofas. The problem is, they tend to warp after some time and do not last as long. This fact is reflected in the price tag. Floor chairs made with Polyurethane foam usually cost much lesser.

High-density foam – In contrast to the above, this rigid foam is built to last longer and is more durable than polyurethane. The support it provides, especially when sitting on the floor, is much better and in my opinion, my baseline choice.

Memory foam – Combining the toughness of high-density foam and softer materials, memory foam is ideal as they provide good support and yet soft enough to be very comfortable for longer sittings. They conform to your body shape, allowing you to rest and sit very satisfyingly. As you might expect, the price point will also be the highest.

Size and Weight

Most floor chairs are made to be compact and can be folded to keep in storage. But that does not mean you do not need to pay attention to its size and weight though.

Consider how much floor space you have. To be certain, measure out the floor space, making allowances for the reclining backrest. With that information in hand, you need to make sure that there is sufficient room for people to walk around without tripping over when the floor chair is in use.

If you opt to buy a large floor chair, consider if you will have any trouble storing it. Does your storage room have enough space? Are you able to lift or drag a 25 lb object around your home?

If your floor chair is taking up a permanent spot in your house, then these might not be as applicable to you.

Back support and cushion

This is one of the most, if not the most important, factors that I use to make my decision. As mentioned earlier, the type of material used influences the cost, but it also means that the amount of back support and seat cushion will be impacted.

You would want a floor chair with sufficient cushion to support your weight, as without one, the chair might buckle under the weight and end up being ineffective.

I would opt for a cushion made of firmer foam as that means most people will be able to use it.

Another area to look into is the back support. Many of the floor chairs out there offer adjustability of the backrests so you can get one that is most comfortable for you. Some backrests are designed with pressure peaks in the lumbar area which provides the best support for most people. Accordingly, these would also mean a higher price point.

Perhaps of less importance is the presence of a headrest. They are useful in supporting the neck, which is great if you are using one for reading.

Adults or children?

Will the floor chair be used by adults or children?

The main thing to take note of here is to get one of the right size. It might be tempting to get a kids floor chair to save space, but they don’t work too well for adults!

Type of flooring

Some floor surfaces are more prone to scratches and damage than others, such as parquet or marble flooring. To ensure that you do not damage your floors when moving the floor chair around, I would recommend placing a floor mat or using chair sliders.

Armrests

Armrests can add to the comfort of floor chairs by giving your arms a place to rest while using them. That said, think about how you would typically use the chair and how you would sit. If you are someone who loves to sit cross-legged (like me!), I would not recommend getting a floor chair with armrests as that will restrict your ability to sit in the right position.

Also, armrests can make people feel constricted, so be sure to keep this point in the back of your mind.

How can I check the quality of a floor chair?

For those of us shopping from home, we would have to rely on reviews to have a better understanding of what’s offered by the manufacturer.

Typically, I look out for the type of material used. It is important to me that the floor chair is able to support my body when I’m using it, which is why I would go for those that are made with thicker cushioning and an ergonomic backrest. The material used should be at least high-density foam which provides better support.

Types of floor chairs

There are no shortage of options when it comes to floor chairs. Here is an overview of what’s available in the market today:
