First, let us figure out the best-sized wall mirror you should be using. There are a couple of factors, nothing complicated, so let’s have a closer look:

Next, decide on the type of wall mirror to use. In a larger room, I would go with one that has a distinct frame. This really draws the attention of the eyes and I find that rectangular shapes plays well most of the time.

In some cases, I would opt for a round wall mirror to hang directly above a sofa set or armchair. When I use smaller accent wall mirrors, I like to select hanging wall mirrors. They are unique and adds a fun touch. Beyond that, you can go for sunburst (or starburst), triangular or oval wall mirrors for alternative and eclectic looks.

And finally, choosing the best wall mirror color that matches the overall feel of the room. Most of the time, I see homes fitted out with black frame wall mirrors. Well, they work, but it’s kind of boring.

While they do go well with almost any setting, you can let your creativity take over and find one that is unique and still match the decor of the room. What should I put next to wall mirrors?

Well, for a start, you can consider placing your wall mirror above a fireplace, a sofa, or along hallways.

In the case of the fireplace, there would be a mantelpiece and ornaments to complement the mirror.

For the sofa, you can consider using a large horizontal wall mirror to create an open-looking area where you can sit down, relax and read a book (one of my favorite things to do!).

Along hallways, I would recommend hanging some photo frames. These can revolve around a theme, for example, family and friends.

Something cool that I did in an old apartment where light was a premium was to hang curtains around a large vertical mirror. This created the illusion of having a window within my home and brightened up the place tremendously.

During Christmas or springtime, you can try placing small trees around and below wall mirrors.

Another scenario that seems to come up more regularly these days is about the use of mirrors in Feng Shui. I have a few friends who have embraced this ancient art form. I’m not entirely sure of their results, but I do know that a lot of what Feng Shui preaches makes a lot of sense.

My quick tips on hanging wall mirrors

Before you go shopping, here are a few simple tips and tricks I picked up over the years:

  1. Do not use more than 1 wall mirror, especially in smaller spaces. They can cause confusion and simply do not look that nice. The only exception is if you are creating a mirror gallery wall.
  2. If you are a believer in feng shui, do not place a mirror opposite your bed. They are thought to bounce energy around the room, which causes you to be restless.
  3. If there is a section of your home that you feel is most beautiful, hang a large mirror across it so that its reflection is constantly in the wall mirror.
  4. In general, remember to hang your wall mirrors at eye level (or rather head level). You would want to be able to look at it easily.
