Nathan James Furniture Review: Great for Budget Conscious Shoppers

I will be sharing my Nathan James furniture review in today’s post!

Nathan James is a furniture retailer that sells primarily through its own website and a few partners including Amazon, Wayfair, Home Depot, and Walmart, and does not have any brick-and-mortar stores.

Founded several years back by a young lady, Brooklyn Burdon, the company currently offers a decent range of furniture that includes tables, seating, storage, and chairs.

Nathan James competes against furniture brands like Article, IKEA, and Wayfair.

Let’s take a deeper dive to find out more!

What style is Nathan James furniture?

Before we get started, let’s talk a little more about the style of furniture you can expect to find at Nathan James.

Similar to several other brands, they do not ‘specialize’ in a particular style, and across their furniture range, you can expect to find a bit of everything:

  • Mid-Century
  • Scandinavian
  • Modern
  • Rustic
  • Contemporary
  • Industrial
  • Glam
  • Farmhouse
  • California Casual
  • Coastal

In a way, this is good for someone who is just searching for new ideas and undecided on the style you want to achieve. This will give you some ideas on how you can decorate your existing or new home.

On the other hand, if you are searching for something specific, you might be disappointed as there is no overarching theme here.

And since they are sort of like a jack of all trades, there isn’t enough within a style to cater to the picky shopper.

Who owns Nathan James furniture?

Nathan James is an entirely remote company, which means they do not have any physical location.

This can be confirmed by looking at one of the job openings which mentions this specifically.

That said, there isn’t a whole lot of information about the staff of the company, except that the owner is Brooklyn Burdon.

She started the company after she moved out of her parent’s place and wanted to design her own place.

At this time, she was dealing with tuition loan payments (which leaves her without much money!) but at the same time, she wanted to make her place somewhere she can call home, and not simply deck it out with a bunch of cheap and ugly looking furniture.

Neither did she want to shop at Ikea and deal with the self-assembly process.

Through her experience searching for a suitable product for herself, she started Nathan James to fulfill the needs of similar shoppers.

Who is Nathan James furniture for?

When it comes to furniture, there is a wide range of consumers for companies to go after.

Typically, I would categorize them as:

  • Budget-conscious – choices will be highly dependent on the price
  • Willing to pay for good quality – has a larger budget and will spend more for high-quality products
  • Designer only – looking for brand names that often mean high price and unique styles

Using a 2-3 seater sofa as an example, someone in the first group will tend to go for something within $800.

The second group tends to have a wider range, generally looking for something between $1000 – $4000.

And in the last group, their budgets are much higher and they are searching for luxury standard sofas such as the Roger Bobois Bubble, which retails at well over $7000.

When it comes to Nathan James (although they don’t offer sofas, unfortunately), they generally fall under the first group, which is great for someone who wants to score a great deal!

Tip: this is somewhat similar to another brand I reviewed: Stone and Beam Furniture

Here is a quick look at some of the latest designs:

Materials and Design: Is Nathan James furniture good quality?

Nathan James is a furniture company that specializes in economical and stylish designs.

While the general look of their products is on par with most contemporary brands, the materials used are what you should expect in a budget-friendly brand.

Most Nathan James pieces have particleboard or MDF frames, with thin veneer surfaces.

The veneers are available in multiple wood finishes, offering different looks option for your home.

Although Nathan James is a somewhat entry level brand, I’m pretty impressed with the quality.

If you’re looking for a well-priced dining table or sideboard that will last quite a few years without too much wear and tear, Nathan James is a great option.

Their tables and TV consoles are also quite sturdy due to the steel legs they use on many models.

This gives them an advantage over some companies (such as Ikea) with similar designs that use composite wood or plastic for legs instead (which often results in wobbly furniture).

Since most of their products can last about 3-5 years before needing replacement, Nathan James makes for an ideal choice if you’re looking for durable but affordable furniture that won’t break your budget.

The delivery experience

Free shipping is offered with every product you purchase on Nathan James, and they are backed by a 100-day return policy.

What this means is that if you are unsatisfied with your purchase, you can return the item to their warehouse in Reno, Nevada.

However, take note that you will have to pay for the shipping cost and ensure that the product is in its original packaging.

Items that are in stock typically take between 3-5 days to ship by UPS, and you get a tracking number the moment a label is issued.

At this moment, they only ship in the United States, excluding the usual areas such as Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii, Alaska, and the US Virgin Islands, as well as PO Boxes, APO or FPO addresses.

Product warranty

Every product from Nathan James comes with a lifetime warranty.

You could say this is a truly unique point among retailers of this price range.

The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, and obviously, the standard terms and conditions do apply, so be sure to check that out first if this is important to you.

Where is Nathan James furniture made?

All of Nathan James’ products are designed in-house with their team working remotely between Canada, the USA, and Europe.

The designs are then fabricated and manufactured in Vietnam and China.

Where can I buy Nathan James furniture?

Nathan James furniture can be purchased directly on their website or through their retail partners such as Amazon, Wayfair, Home Depot, and Walmart.

It seems to me that Wayfair, Home Depot, and Walmart are only carrying a very limited range of products, so I will tend to give them a miss.

The main advantage to shopping on Amazon seems to be the abundance of reviews. Looks like most people are much more comfortable buying here.

It could be that there are lots of people with an Amazon Prime membership which offers free delivery and cashback if you are holding the Prime credit card.

Sometimes, you do get additional discounts with the membership, particularly on Prime Day.

I would personally shop on Amazon too as I will enjoy all the same terms and conditions, and still be able to enjoy the perks with my Prime membership.

My favorite furniture from Nathan James

Before I end the post, I wanted to share a few pieces of furniture that stood out to me as I was browsing the Amazon store.

Here they are!

In conclusion: Nathan James furniture review

As a furniture brand, Nathan James is a bit of a mixed bag.

The quality of the pieces varies from product to product, but overall they are decent at their price points.

Some of them look cheap, and some of them aren’t as comfortable as they should be.

But when compared to other stores that sell similar products at similar prices—like IKEA—Nathan James is a better option because it looks like high-end furniture without costing you too much money.

And if you see something you like but have a question about it, the company’s customer service team is friendly and knowledgeable and can help you out over email or phone within a few hours (usually).
